Are your new hire orientation practices supporting first-year retention? Companies invest significant time and money recruiting and hiring top talent and need proven practices for keeping new hires around for the long haul. Learn how Ochsner fast-tracked productivity, increased new hire job satisfaction and reduced first-year flight by overhauling its onboarding experience.

During this interactive session participants will:

1) Explore common onboarding challenges and ways to overcome them;
2) Learn proven tools to improve the new hire and hiring manager experience; and,
3) Learn Ten Tips for Effective Onboarding - many of which can be easily implemented.

Melissa Hopson Sparks, PhD

Ochsner Health System


Missy joined Ochsner Health System in 2011. Her primary responsibilities include workforce development, leader and employee onboarding, performance management, system engagement strategy and frontline learning and development. She is on faculty in the Ochsner Leadership Institute. She develops and executes career development initiatives that ensure the personal/professional growth of employees and result in the achievement of business objectives.

Prior to joining Ochsner, Missy served as vice president of education and communications at Alliance Safety Council (formerly known as the Safety Council of the Louisiana Capital Area). There she oversaw the development of petro-chemical and utility workforce safety training. Prior to joining the Safety Council, Missy was an assistant professor in the Communications Department at Xavier University of Louisiana and a consultant providing communication expertise and solutions to clients in business, government, and nonprofit organizations.

Missy earned a PhD in communication studies, with a focus on rhetoric and public address and a minor in political science, from Louisiana State University. She is a member of SHRM, the e-Learning Guild and is a Certified Occupational Safety Specialist - COSS®. She serves on the board of directors for two non-profits: Trinity Christian Community and Communities in Schools.

 Cancellation Policy
As soon as you complete the registration process, you will be guaranteed a seat at this event. The completed registration process initiates an invoice from your ATD Baton Rouge Chapter to you that may be paid online, by mail, or on the day of the event.

Your ATD Baton Rouge Chapter may have to pay for your meal and other fees if you register and then cannot attend.  To help us protect your chapter’s finances, please submit cancellations at least 48 hours before the event.  Otherwise, we will have to invoice you to cover these costs.  If that should happen, we will be happy to receive your registration for future events as soon as you have settled your outstanding balance.  

What happens if I register and then cannot attend an event?
If you cancel at least 48 hours in advance, you will not be charged.  If you already made payment, we will be happy to issue a refund to you.  If you cannot cancel before 48 hours, you are welcome to send a substitute in your place.  Just send an email to so that we can have materials prepared for that person.  This helps us ensure the person feels as welcomed as possible.
