Across the country, more than 70 million Americans are Skilled Through Alternative Routes (STARs) – like military service, on-the-job training, or community colleges – rather than a bachelor’s degree. These workers have the skills to succeed in higher-earning roles, but consistently face barriers to opportunity due to unnecessary degree requirements in job postings. The result is that STARs face limited opportunities for economic mobility — and employers in both the public and private sector continue to grapple with perceived talent shortages.

An economy that works for STARs is an economy that works better for everyone. In this presentation, learn about STARs in Louisiana and the groundbreaking Tear the Paper Ceiling campaign to discuss the role that HR leaders can play in shifting to a skills-first approach to hiring and talent development. Attendees will learn how their own organizations can chart a course from awareness to behavior shifts to sustained change.
